The model provides insight into our own personal growth and can help us understand and empathize with others at different stages of their lives.

It’s important to know how our perspective and priorities change as we progress through different decades of our lives so that we know what to expect next for ourselves and how to effectively navigate others.

Dr. Jeff is an olympian and coach to many other olympians and business titans. This model is based on his observations and is not a rigid framework.

The Life Lens Progression is organized by decades, starting from 0 to 10 and continuing up to 100+. Each decade is characterized by a driver, motive, purpose, strength, and liability.

Notice how the driver in one decade can be a liability in another.

We have to be cognizant of these changes so we don’t mistake a liability for an asset or a weakness for a strength.

The Model

1. 0 to 10: The driver is curiosity, and the motive is exploration. The purpose is to create a connection with the world. The strength is no limits, but the liability is the risk of injury.

2. 10 to 20: The driver is emergence, and the motive is to understand boundaries and fit into society. The purpose is to find personal identity and fit into the culture. The strength is abundant enthusiasm, but the liability is recklessness.

3. 20 to 30: The driver is altruism, and the motive is to create a utopia of equality and encouragement. The purpose is to achieve equality and eliminate favoritism. The strength is conviction, but the liability is rigidity.

4. 30 to 40: The driver is acquisition, and the motive is to achieve personal validation through material possessions. The purpose is to validate one's life and gain external recognition. The strength is tenacity, but the liability is blindness to alternative perspectives.

5. 40 to 50: The driver is order, and the motive is to establish structure and manage obligations. The purpose is to create harmony and conserve energy. The strength is efficiency, but the liability is exclusion.

6. 50 to 60: The driver is contribution, and the motive is to give back and share wisdom. The purpose is to fulfill a survivor's obligation and elevate others. The strength is reliability, but the liability is excess.

7. 60 to 70: The driver is mentorship, and the motive is to guide and support others. The purpose is to create a legacy and reconcile one's life. The strength is insistence, but the liability is dependence.

8. 70 to 80: The driver is proclamation, and the motive is to express oneself without concern for others' opinions. The purpose is to add value through wisdom. The strength is honesty, but the liability is alienation.

9. 80 to 90: The driver is assessment, and the motive is to maintain dignity and provide wisdom. The purpose is to reconcile one's life and leave a memorable legacy. The strength is wisdom, but the liability is resignation.

10. 90 to 100+: The driver is revitalization, and the motive is to continue influencing others. The purpose is to bless every second and create a legacy of wisdom. The strength is immense power, but the liability is dependence.

This model provides insight into our own journey and helps us understand and have compassion for others at different stages of life. It will help you embrace your unique path and make the most of each decade.

One of Dr. Jeff’s clients, Greg, was favored to win the gold medal in the Olympics but was starting to mentally unravel. This Champions Corner Arena session focused on the concept of a "cornerman" and how to find and develop one. A corner man is an advisor who provides real-time guidance and support to help individuals achieve their goals. Dr. Jeff explained that a corner man is different from a coach or mentor because they consider all aspects of a person's life and provide practical solutions for real-life situations. Dr. Jeff shared his personal experience with cornermen and how they influenced his journey. He emphasized the importance of finding a resonant connection with a corner man and advised participants to spend time with potential advisors, research their background, and trust their instincts. He also encouraged individuals to reach out to potential corner men, regardless of their level of experience, as many advisors are eager to pass on their wisdom.

The meeting also included a Q&A session with TGA plus members. Participants asked questions about various topics, including the importance of adaptability, managing tasks effectively, and the significance of showing up and giving one's best every day. Dr. Jeff provided insightful responses, emphasizing the need for adaptability, focusing on the most important tasks, and maintaining a champion's mindset.

The meeting concluded with a discussion on the scorecard concept, which emphasizes the importance of adaptation and evaluating one's performance based on how well they adapt to reality. The Champions Scorecard is part of the Champions Perfect Day.

Dr. Jeff highlighted the significance of showing up and giving one's best every day, as well as the impact individuals can have on others by being a positive example.

Future Champion. Welcome to The Corner Update #1. Since this is the very first Corner Update, I supposed we should tell you how it works:

At least once a month, Dr. Jeff Spencer will fire up a video and answer the questions in the comments below. We will do our best to compile your questions for Jeff that are left in the wrong spot - like the wrong post, Twitter or Facebook - but we can only guarantee that the questions posted on this post will be answered this month. Other things to keep in mind:

Here is one of the best productivity tips we’ve ever heard, it comes from Dr. Jeff Spencer. You can implement it today and it will take a just a few minutes to give it a try.

Don’t be fooled by the simplicity. Here is short video clip breaking it down

Dr Jeff Spencer’s “The Three Lists”

This is straight from the Prince of Peak Productivity himself, Dr. Jeff Spencer2, and it’s a quick one you can implement immediately. (as in, tonight). At the end of each day, make 3 lists before you “leave the office” for the day.

List #1
Here’s everything I got done today.

This serves to complete a loop in your mind. Your brain will “check off” everything on that list and no longer worry about it. Sounds simple, but relieving your brain of cognitive overload from “completed” tasks that it doesn’t realize were completed is a game changer.

Again, it’s simple but it clears up some cognitive space for the other two lists.

List #2
Here’s what I need to get done AND I know exactly how to do it.

This list is self-explanatory. By writing down what you know you need to do and labeling it as something you know exactly how to do, your brain eliminates that as a stressor.

You’ve got it down, you’ve got a plan to do it, and now your brain can relax or refocus. It’s not trying to solve something that’s already solved and you’ve given it something it knows it can work on tomorrow.

List #3
Here’s what I need to get done BUT I don’t know exactly how to do it.

This is the list your brain will work on subconsciously during the rest of the night, during the time you’re asleep, and, if you’re paying attention, first thing in the morning after you wake up.

By making these lists you’re telling your subconscious:

1. This is what we don’t need to think about anymore - at all.

2. This is what we will do tomorrow since we know how

3. This is what you should work on and be receptive to while in the shower, asleep, or whatever.

If you start your next day with List #2, you get momentum and productivity to start the day. Since you know what to do and how to do it, you’re not losing time trying to figure stuff out. And your brain will have even more bandwidth to continue to problem solve on List #3. Remember, you do your best problem solving subconsciously - that’s why all the good shit hits you in the shower or in the middle of the night.

You may find that the momentum from finishing stuff on List #2 will give you the energy to tackle stuff on List #3. Many times, the solutions to the items on list #3 will come to you while you are working on the items from list #2 -

If you have prepped your brain appropriately, you’re more likely to recognize them when they appear.

Simple, but powerful.

Bonus:
The Morning Inbox

Instead of rushing out of bed in the morning, lay there for just a moment and check-in with yourself.

If you made your lists the night before, your brain was working while you were sleeping. Some powerful answers might be sitting right there for you. It would be a shame to rush out of bed to start the day and miss them.

Give it a try.

Low effort, low risk, high potential payoff.

• The key word in the champions vocabulary. Restraint. One of the most difficult things for a hard-charging, driven person to do is…nothing. Learning to do nothing when the human impulse is to do something can separate the repeat winners from the the one-time wonders.

• Unknown potential. The formula for reaching your full potential is known potential x unknown potential. Unknown potential is an emergent property. It’s not something that is put into you by someone else. Instead, it’s dormant within you already, the only way to awaken it is through exposure, proximity and access to the right people, places and things.

• Exponential growth. Exponential growth is not a byproduct of perfecting things, like your business. It’s a byproduct of recognizing all the components of a system and removing the low grade friction by creating harmony between them.

• Human mentalities. Every human is hardwired with the human mindset, their survival impulses. They also have a choice to override those survival impulses and make decisions from the “Champion’s Mind”. The human mindset gets first dibs, but the Champion’s Mind has the final say.

• Hardwiring. There are things that we were born with that we didn’t ask for. The human mindset being one of them. Our biology is what it is - sometimes it works for us, sometimes it works against us. Either way, it’s best to understand it so that we can use it to our advantage when the opportunity presents itself.

• Nobody wins alone. It’s important to learn what makes a good teammate so that you can find them and become one yourself.

• Three People. If you plan on doing something extraordinary there are three main types of people you need in your corner. 1) the technician 2) the mentor 3) the cornerman. You will likely need all three and they will likely need to be different people. This is covered in the “Three People You Need To Succeed” article.

• Never discount your contribution. You are the only you in all of creation. Your unique blend of skills, disposition, personality has never existed before you and will never exist again. Don’t discount yourself or your contribution. And don’t try to be like someone else, your gift is that you are you.

It doesn’t have to be big, flashy or impressive to anyone else to be extraordinary. It just has to be… above ordinary. Doing ordinary things is simple…just do what everyone else is doing. Dr. Jeff Spencer is one of the greatest performances and mindset coaches of all time. Before he was coaching, he was one of the greatest performers in the world - in both Olympic sport(s), as chiropractor and a world-renowned glass artist.

He’s seen uber-talented people die alone and homeless and he’s seen marginally talented people succeed beyond all reasonable explanation. During one of the first conversations I ever had with Jeff he said to me:

The three types?

1. Technicians

2. Mentors

3. Cornerman

Three type of people. Seems simple enough, right?

In theory, it is. In practice, it’s difficult because 1) most people haven’t developed the skill to discern what category someone else falls in and 2) most people aren’t clear about what category they fall into - which means they offer or sell themselves as something they’re not.

And there’s where the seemingly simple becomes frustratingly complex.

Let’s work through this.

First, we start with the The Resheske Hierarchy, first introduced to us by Lukas Resheske.

The Clarity Hierarchy

We use Lukas’ clarity hierarchy2 to reason from the ground up and back down again.

Here’s The Flyover:

• Effective tools are derived from effective tactics. Which means the tactics inform the tools, not the other way around.

• Effective tactics are derived from effective strategies. Which means strategy informs tactics, not the other way around.

• Effective strategies are derived from principles. Which means principles inform strategy, not the other way around.

You can see where we’re going this, right? Just for good measure:

• Sound principles are derived from philosophy. Philosophy informs principles, yada yada yada…

This is a function over form3 thing, which we have written about extensively and link in the footnotes, so we can skip straight to the conclusions:

If someone is obsessing over all the ways to use a tool like Chat GPT, they are letting tools drive tactics and tactics drive strategy. In other words, it will end in great tools being used to deploy a piss poor strategy. It’s like having the best chainsaw and being in the wrong forest. Even if something gets done well, it’s the wrong thing done well.

Tools should never drive tactics. Tactics should never drive strategies. Strategies should never determine principles.

You get it.

Technicians are masters of tools and tactics. They can get paid well and they are necessary - the technical stuff has to get done and done well. But what makes the technician great at technical stuff is that they are zoomed-in on the details. So zoomed in that that cannot possibly see the whole picture. If they were to zoom out to see more of the picture, they would be less valuable and less effective as a technician.

You have to know who your technicians are and:

• Keep them zoomed in to keep them effective

• Do not let them dictate strategy. Remember, they don’t can’t see the full picture.

Mentors are master of strategy. The mentor is someone that has done what you want to do in the domain you want to do it, or helped others do what you want to do in your domain. What makes the mentor effective is they are zoomed out and they are guiding you down a path they are familiar with. If they were to zoom in and start doing technical work for you, they would be less effective as a mentor.

You have to know who your mentors are and:

• Keep them zoomed out to keep them effective

• Don’t let them get stuck on tools. Remember, if they get too close to the tree, they will miss the rest of the forest.

The Cornerman is the secret weapon. The cornerman meets the requirement of the mentor, has experienced success across domains and is over 60 years old (there is a reason for this, I promise). Where the mentor might have built the business you want, he may also be on his third marriage with estranged kids and on the verge of burnout. The cornerman sees all areas of your life - the ones the mentor doesn’t see or values differently- and teaches you to create harmony and sustainability.

Why is 60 years the magic number?

• Hard times make strong people

• Strong people make good times

• Good times make weak people

• Weak people make hard times

… it takes three generations to see everything humanity is going to throw at you. A generation is 20 years. Anyone under 60 has not experienced a full cycle. This is discussed further in The Wise Man In The Mountain4

You have to know who your Cornermen are and:

• Keep them zoomed out to keep them effective

• Don’t drag them into the tactical or the technical.

• Understand that if they don’t make sense to you, it’s likely your experience that is lacking, not their understanding.

You know how grandma always seemed to have crazy ideas that, over time, ended up being not so crazy, after all? That’s because grandma has seen far more than you have. Don’t discount it.

Some things to look out for:

• Categorizing or paying someone as a mentor that is getting into the weeds or technical stuff. If they orient towards tools or technical stuff, they are probably trying to be something they are not. If you fancy yourself mentor, stop getting into the technical stuff or accept you’re a technical and become a great one. (Great technicians can make great money, BTW)

• Categorizing or paying someone as a technician that is getting into strategy. It’s the inverse of above. If you’re a great technician you have to understand that to be a great technicians, you won’t be able to see the whole picture - and that’s okay. If you want to be a “big picture” person, you have to stop obsessing over tools and tactics.

There is no right answer or judgement. Being who you are to the best of your ability is always the best path forward.

Okay, so let’s overlay the three people and the clarity hierarchy…

Another Look At The Hierarchy

The technician must operate within the strategies developed by the mentor.

The mentor must deploy strategies within the parameters set by the cornerman.

What tools should you use? It depends on the tactics.
What tactics should you use? It depends on the strategies.
What strategies should you use? It depends on principles and philosophy.

If there is scope creep, if these rules are violated, or flowing the wrong way there will be misalignment, turning you into a ticking time bomb.

Although it’s a framework for the people to keep around, you can also use this framework to orient or guide your own education. Here is how the Guardian Academy ecosystem is built:

Many Guardians come to events already experts in their field - they’re great technicians or mentors. The problem with being an expert in your field is you are limited by the paradigm(s) of your field.

They don’t need to learn more about the thing they already do, they need to reinvent completely.

Laurel Portie is a great example. She was already great at making videos and running ads when she came into our world. She was straddling line the between technician - running ads for people - and mentor - teaching others how to do it for themselves.

Since she already knew how to do it and teach it, she didn’t need more technical knowledge, she needed to apply the correct principles to her situation.

• Bumpers5 to protect her schedule

• As she added Bumpers, she needed to practice and deploy allegiance capital

• As she deployed allegiance capital and experienced the benefits, she was able to teach her students how to do the same in the context of their videos and ads

• She turned the Solvable Problem(TM) into Magical Math; the same concept wrapped in the context of videos and ads.

• She taught recapture, reallocate6 in the context of ads - recapturing the waste and reallocating it more effectively. In this case, it’s simply killing losing ads and reallocating he budget to better performing ads or to test new ones.

We could go on and on but I think you get it…

Laurel took Guardian Academy Principles, integrated them into her expertise and reinvented them. The strategies, tactics, tools, and details change iteration by iteration, but the principle behind it does not.

The result?

A unique strategy that has taken over the industry (which is why we created The Laurel Corner7).

The way we think and talk about mindset is wrong. The conversation around and about “mindset” is upside down, backwards and largely unhelpful.

The Human Mindset Is So Very Wrong

Humans are interesting because we are a walking contradiction.

We want something new and yet we reject it because it’s unknown.

We want to move forward focus on gain, but are driven by our fear of loss.

We want to be more like others, failing to recognize that we are our own greatest asset.

We wish for more success and more talent, but neglect discipline and readiness.

We want to win, but instead we whine.

And this is why people fail to reach their full potential.

We aspire to be supernatural but let our natural impulses lead the way.

And it’s not because your mindset is broken. It’s because it exists. You’re hardwired with it and it can’t change. That’s why it’s a mindSET.

“If my mindset can’t change, does that mean I’m forever doomed!?”

No, no it doesn’t.

Because there is another system that can override it.

In his book, Thinking Fast and Slow, Nobel Prize winner Daniel Kahneman shows us how decisions are made. He demonstrates that there are two system from which we make decisions:

The impulsive System 1 and the thoughtful, deliberate System 2.

In Dr. Jeff’s framework, the human mindset is our default beliefs, hardwired into our biology, and focused on survival. It operates on high-speed impulses and is not concerned with greatness or achievement. On the other hand, the champion's mindset is consciously applied wisdom calibrated towards excellence. It requires deliberate and intentional decision-making.

System 1 is the Human Mindset. Impulsive. Frustrated. Mediocre.It’s the hardwiring we are all born with…and it never goes away and it always has first dibs.

System 2 is the “Champions Mind”. Prudent. Prolific. Extraordinary. It can be cultivated, trained and refined. It doesn’t have first dibs, but it does have final say.
