This is an “Arena Prompt” post. Arena Prompts are things that can came up, often impromptu, at an event or experience that had a profound impact on attendees. It’s labeled “Arena Prompt” for the readers that want to engage the field and aren’t sure where to start. Some of these will be free, some of them will be for TGA + exclusively.
Future Guardian! Ever find yourself trying to figure out what to do next? We call this “looking out the windshield” - looking ahead to see what might be worth doing or what might work.
What we see looking “out the windshield” represents our best estimation of the future. There are seemingly limitless possibilities out there - but there’s bad news: it’s an estimation.
There is also good news:
You have done a lot of things in your relationships, business and life that have worked well in the past. Many of which you probably stopped doing in the pursuit of “more”, “different” or as an impulse due to fear of missing out or being left behind.
And that’s okay. Welcome to being human.
I have a suggestion.
Take a glance in the Rearview Mirror.
There is evidence there.
It often goes like this:
“I would like to get more customers and fill my restaurant.”
Have you filled your restaurant before?
“yes”
What did you do?
“We ran a really cool direct mail campaign. We were actually oversubscribed, it was crazy”
Have you run direct mail campaign again?
“Uh… well.. no”
…whether it’s because you think direct mail is dead, because you were convinced you needed to run Facebook ads or just always feel like you need to do something new…
The next best step is right in front of you the rearview mirror.
It may not work the same way again. But we have to test it because we have proof that it can work. If it doesn’t, great. Check it off the list. You’ll be surprised at how often it DOES work - and then you’ll be kicking yourself for neglecting it all this time.
Whatever it is you’re trying to accomplish - ask yourself… have I done this or had this before?
If so, how or why?
And you have done it again?
Can you do it again, remove the parts you didn’t like and double down on the parts you did?
A glance in the rearview mirror might get you headed in the right direction.
It should certainly prompt some discussion in the Arena or comment section below. Let me know.

PS. I just downloaded the substack app for the first time last night and it’s actually really cool. It’s well organized and all Substack contributors I see leaving notes are thoughtful. Plus, the app will read the articles to you like little mini audio casts

My biggest rear view mirror moment came when I had to seriously reduce the time I spent in my business without losing income so I could provide daycare for my grandson. I realized that all the tools, tactics, and strategies I had added to my marketing and sales process had 5Xed the time spent in my business without an appreciable increase in revenue. Returning to a strategy a optimized for conversations instead of funnels and automation helped me reduce my marketing activities by 80% and my revenue actually increased.
