Future Guardian,
I have a question for you.
Ever feel the need?
…The Need For Speed?
Ever wish that you would just get to your goals faster?
I get it.
Everyone struggles with the "need for speed." But it's not actually speed that you’re after. Remember, you can move really fast in a big circle. Or worse, in the wrong direction - which will get you further away from what you want (duh)
Try this:
Close your eyes and imagine moving toward your goal quickly.
You aren't just moving fast, you're closing the gap between where you're at now and where you want to be. There is a vector component in- a specific direction. You aren't imagining speed, you're imagining speed + direction...
.....What you’re imagining is collapsing the time to target
You’re imagining velocity
...and mistaking it for speed.
We rarely want to “go fast.”
What we really want is to get there faster or to…
Collapse Time.
We just mistake them as being synonymous.
Before we can Collapse Time we need Certainty that we are headed in the right direction. We also need to know we aren't heading right into a brick wall or into a minefield. “Certainty” is the most efficient path forward, with the highest probability of success, given what we know right now, and it's individual to you.
Thus, before we can have Certainty, we must have Clarity. Clarity of who you are, where you are, where you want to be, and the type of route you want to take (these are your personal preferences).
Google Maps is a great example.
It cannot give you directions without a starting location or desired destination. Then, it maps out multiple routes and lets you choose which one you want to take. The fastest one? The one that avoids highways? The one that makes a pitstop at your favorite hole-in-the-wall restaurant? It gives you an opportunity to incorporate your preferences.
Most importantly, it adjusts when new information is revealed. It re-routes when traffic gets jammed up, when roads close, or when something new reveals itself. That function exists because Google Maps knows that things change and following an outdated plan is silly.
After it has Clarity (current destination, desired destination, and preferences), Google Maps can give you the path with the highest level of Certainty that you get to where you are trying to go- at this point in time.
As things change, Google Maps will re-route if necessary in an attempt to collapse time down.
If you’re driving around with a local who knows all the back alleys, shortcuts, where the cops and speed traps are, you can collapse time even further with their knowledge in real-time.
Clarity is diagnostic, in nature.
Certainty is a blueprint or a plan.
Collapsing Time is expertise, receptivity and ongoing adjustments.
So if you want to get from where you’re at to where you want to be reliably, the process is:
Clarity --> Certainty --> Collapsing Time
In that order.
You cannot have one without the thing that precedes it.
If you want to collapse time, you need to know the options for the most efficient path(s) forward. If you don’t, focus on that.
If you can’t figure out the path(s) forward, it’s likely because you’re not clear on where you’re at or where you want to be - or your own personal preferences. Put time into figuring those things out.
You can use the 3C’s as a guide to discern where to focus in order to unlock the next thing.
Here are some deeper dives into each of the Three C’s
Keep an eye out for a 3C AMA or QnA for paid subscribers in the next couple of weeks.
Looking forward!
